I’m curious how many of you have your high schooler doing units on their own rather than with the siblings? I planned the whole school year around my 9th grader doing the connecting continents units with us. He says he wants to do it with us, but then acts annoyed when his siblings ask questions or want to watch videos. He’s a teen boy now and doesn’t want me telling him what to do. He also did public school k-7, so he’s in a public school mindset. He’s had a year and a half to get past this, but he’s all about checking the boxes and “what’s my grade?”. He’s also severely ADHD and rushes through his work. Sitting there while I read is almost too much for him to take. He’s constantly interrupting me to ask for some answer to a box on his notebooking page. 😫 I’ve tried every way I know how to explain to him how gather round works. He just doesn’t get it. He just wants to fill in the boxes and move on. He acts like he knows everything and keeps insinuating that school is taking him longer because of the gather round time. I’m at a loss. On the one hand, I don’t want to exclude him. On the other hand, the other kids are missing out when he rushes everyone and stresses me out. UPDATE: Just thought I’d update for anyone finding this post. We worked through the frustration and my 9th grader is now doing very well doing the read aloud with us. I did take some points off a couple lessons in a row for not being thorough. That was enough to slow him down. I also began asking him to present something here and there. He seems to be enjoying the lessons more. 😆
