My son, who is in 6th grade, has declared himself “bad at math”. He isn’t bad at it, he catches on to new concepts easily, but he doesn’t like doing it. How can I encourage him to stop saying things like “I hate math”, “This is too hard”, and “I can’t do it.” It takes him a really long time to do a lesson because, “I need a break,” and “making nonsense noises helps me concentrate.” I tell him that this negative talk just makes it worse, but it keeps going and it’s wearing on me. 🙁
