Looking for advice: My son just turned 8 and is still a struggling reader. We did a very phonics focused program for kindergarten and 1st grade. During the individual lessons he did great. But putting it all together has been a serious struggle. Reviewing flashcards he does ok, but put those words into a sentence in a book and he acts like he can’t do it. I know part of it is he hates to sit still (likely has ADHD) so reading is his least favorite subject anyhow. Part of it is just lack of confidence and just his mindset that he can’t read…when really he can. We had continued on with the same curriculum this year for 2nd grade but also added in all about reading. We recently decided we needed a new approach and just scrapped everything and switched to Gather Round. We have completed week 1 of NAB and plan to continue through the rest of the unit. My question is, should I just do GR for a while and have him practice reading things I know he can read in the lessons as we go (like the Bible verses) and give all other reading a rest for a little while? Do I keep working through GR and add in fun easier reader books for him to get additional practice even if he gets frustrated and hates it? Or do I do GR and continue working through AAR a couple of times a week until he is a stronger reader? Open to any ideas or suggestions! Thanks!
