How to round out your history in an easy and enjoyable way? Poetry, artist and composer study based on your chosen time period! We do this as a family, usually first thing with scripture reading. Simplest way, pick an artist, poet and composer from your chosen time frame. Choose 6-12 pieces of art by each of them. Each morning read the chosen poem aloud, study the picture and have them pick a small portion to imitate(draw,) on a blank, index card, while listening to the music piece. The next day do the same but have them copy parts of the poem while listening to the music. Study each piece 1-2 weeks then move to the next and follow suit. Want to add a little more complexity after mastering the above, add a short! bio or video about each artist. Read or play the chosen bio the next day; have the student write a summary of their life on an index card. Do one artist’s bio and summary per week. You can store the index cards in a card collection sheet protector that clicks into a binder. Voila, a nice keepsake for your teen. You can have fun with this and let them choose a different medium for the art sketches. Want to up the complexity more after mastering the above? Have them write a short poem in the style of the poet. Rough drafts on paper with final draft on a lined index card or cards. Store in pockets. This takes 15-30 minutes a day and adds hours to your overall history study over the course of 4 years or however many you have left. Plus a keepsake for portfolio evaluation, graduation table and parents! Now, there are places that have done all or some of the work for you.
