There hasn't been any love of learning over here for a while. Our last curriculum was pretty dry. Sure, it was well thought out. It was perfectly ok. But... I was even slightly bored teaching it. School had become a chore to all of us. To get out of our slump, back in November I switched to Gather Round. We had used the last curriculum for 3 years and the same struggles at the start were still struggles at the present. I had hoped GR would allow us a little more fun in our days, but when we did North American Birds... then Asia, and my kids still looked at school as a chore... I was fine with it. At least I thought teaching was more interesting! πŸ˜‚ Enter... Unit 3: Space. Guys. This is it. It has sparked their interest and I get it now. I get it when people say kids can have a love of learning. They are off making solar systems with playdough in their free time... zero prompting. My daughter (7) is making books about adventures in space... without being told. My son (9) came downstairs yesterday with an Apollo 11 he made out of Lego, complete with a removable "Eagle" module, and Buzz, Neil, and Michael lego figures... again, unasked. My daughter chats about Michael Collins like he is a friend. I am so beyond impressed with GR. I know this will not be the response to every subject or unit. Maybe this will be the only one. Even so, this experience, watching them grow and become passionate about something... wow. What a blessing to this Mama-Teacher's heart. Thank you @Rebecca at Gather 'Round. Thank you GR Team. ❀
