Ok I’m totally at a loss, so I’ll apologize now for my novel. My oldest (8yo-3rd grade) hates a challenge. So much comes easy to him that when it’s not exactly perfect the first time it’s a fight to complete anything. After not liking what I picked for science and history at all; we’ve basically unschooled/done lots of read aloud all year. (it’s our first year of homeschooling). I haven’t been totally happy unschooling because he can’t tell me anything he’s learning through oral narratives, written, projects etc. My middle kiddo started doing the R2R program which he loves so my eldest wanted to do a unit too. I let him pick any unit. He picked Oceania. Keep in mind he’s my animals kid. But after months of telling me he’s over animals and wants to learn other things I didn’t direct him towards an animal based unit. I decided to do upper elementary for him (because otherwise I was sure he would tell me it was babyish). I have lurked here since last spring so I decided we would split every lesson into two days. He is having a fit, every day is a fight that it is too hard. I am trying to convince him he can’t know if he doesn’t like something if he hasn’t even tried it but he only wants to learn about the animals. Granted, then he’s upset it’s not the animal he likes. I’m at a loss do we try the lower level (I did digital)? Is it just not a good fit for him? Where is the balance of encouraging him to grow and learn new things, finding his own path and putting limits on him to make him a responsible adult? Thank you for reading all this and any insight you may have.
